Historie:
EUF, background and goals
Eritrean youth organisation in Norway, established 1994
Members: above 80 members and more than 50 % are females.
Goals:
It wishes to gather and organize all the Eritrean Oslo and nearby. One of the main goals is to strive to ensure and enhance the sense of Eritrean culture and identity among our youth.
The organisation will strive to engage Eritrean youth in our country's many developments and interests. Furthermore, it wishes to strengthen cooperation with, and among Eritrean youth in Eritrea, Norway and abroad. Additionally it will collaborate with some Norwegian organisations, with the intention of integration in Norwegian society.
Structure:
In the EUF board we have a chairman, a vice chairman, an economist and two deputy board members. The activities are then divided in four committees. One is appointed in each committee, and he/she reports back to the board.
A: Education:
This committee is delegated by two board members; they form out a plan over the activities that are to be engaged in. One of the main priorities is to organize a place where eritrean pupils can get help with subjects they find difficult. The committee wishes to organize seminars where the goal is to enhance interest for higher education among our youth. Additionally, the committee arranges a dinner for our final – year students on the 24th of May; here they recognize their accomplishments through diplomas. Last, but definitely not least, the committee promotes the participation of Zura Hagerka.
B: Sport:
This committee organizes sport activities that gather our children, youth, men and women. Most of the activities are held in summer time, but the committee is setting up plans that can make it possible to hold similar activities in winter time also. Our summers tend to be a little short after all. The most popular sports are football and running, basketball is getting more and more attention. The committee is also responsible for participation in tournaments abroad .
C: Culture and heritage:
This committee is delegated by one of the board members and one member of the EUF. They have started a dance group who explore and focus on our rich culture, with nine beautiful nationalities through dance and fashion shows. This group has above 30 members from the age of 13 to 26 years, and the number is increasing continually. This kind of activities has invoked a lot of interest among our youngsters. They have performed on our Independence Day celebration, and even for several Norwegian organisations.
D: Entertainment:
Our committee for entertainment is delegated by one board member and five EUF members. It is responsible for our annual dinner around Christmas time that gathers all Eritrean youth. That evening is a way to sum up the year that has passed. It acknowledges all the effort that has been made by our youth in our society in Oslo. Here we crown the person of the year (the one who contributed the most to develop our youth organisation), student of the year, shikorina and shikor of the year, student and sportsman of the year. This year a similar dinner was made for our youth under the age of 18.
Influence:
These last three years we have witnessed goal-oriented activities established by the Eritrean government through NUEYS, and this has invoked a lot of interest among our youth, which has strengthened our organization. We have increased our members and our youth activities through well – established and goal – oriented committees, which can be measured by our cooperation with a couple of Norwegian organizations and companies, like for instance UNICEF and EDB.
Support:
The EUF apply annually to one of Norway's departments. This department allocates funds to organisations and activities for and by immigrants. So far EUF has only managed to get funds related to our homework – help project, which is not much support compared to what is said to be out there. We are not being able to increase the contribution we could get from the different departments and institutions. However, EUF has managed to have one representative in the council of immigration, which functions as a bridge between all the organisations by immigrants and the city council.
Obstacles:
Lack of continuity: As mentioned above EUF was established in 1994, lack of continuity however, prevented the organisation from coping with the way it should and could have been developed. As we all know young people are very dynamic and their lifestyle change equally. In the past we have repeatedly observed that some of our board members leave the city or the country in order to get an education or job. Lack of flexibility often left the organisation in a limbo, which highlights a weakness connected to visibility. For the last 15 years the importance of organizing a strong and goal oriented youth movement has not been emphasized by the majority.
Lack of communication: The EUF board has not made itself visible to its members, through for instance meetings. Structures and routines that can easily be transferred through the years are here essential. The goals and intentions of the organisation must be clear for the members and potentially new members. In order to cope with this issue, today's EUF is divided in different committees. Communication among the members and the board is a critical factor here. When things are not done right, or where there is room for improvement every organisation needs feedback. For instance, these last years our homework – help project has been held on Saturdays. This project however, has not reached it potential, reactions are suggesting that Saturday is not the most ideal day for our pupils. The EUF can now review the project, and improve the offer.
Economy: Another obstacle is the lack of place. We still need a common place that we can call our own, where our youth can meet, establish and strengthen relations. To get a place though, you need to strengthen the economy of the organisation. EUF has never had economical growth since its establishment.
